Understanding the development process

This course provides an overview of the key stages, events and issues in developing affordable housing and regeneration schemes from site identification and scheme inception through to handover and project completion.

Acquisition, Feasibility and Project Planning for Development

This course follows on from Understanding the Development Process, and looks in more detail at the early stages in development management, including site finding, negotiation, valuation, project planning and the conveyancing process. Including undertaking feasibility studies focusing on common legal and technical issues that arise on housing development sites.

Building, Contracts and managing On-site Developments

This course follows on from Understanding the Development Process, and looks in more detail at the construction procurement process, types of building contracts focusing on the JCT D&B 2016 form including important clauses and their application, an overview of the stages and elements of construction and then how to be an effective client during the construction.

Getting the best from the Clerk of Works

This course explains how we get the right quality during the construction phase, the players involved and their responsibilities. The course focuses on the role of the Clerk of Work / Construction Inspector, and explains their duties, typical activities and how the Project Manager can get the best from their CoW.

Financial Viability Appraisal Explained

This course explains the main ways in which financial viability for housing schemes is assessed, covering housing for rent, shared ownership and outright sale. It explains terms such as yield, payback, discounted cash flows, net present value, internal rate of return and others, so that users of viability appraisal tools understand what these figures mean.

Design and Planning for Development

This course follows on from Understanding the Development Process, and looks in more detail at how to appoint & manage the design team and the design process, identifying typical design issues and the importance of effective design review. The course then moves on to the planning system, forward planning and development control, planning polices, the process, conditions and obligations.

Getting the best from the EA & Consultant Team

This course provides an overview of the role and typical responsibilities of the Employer’s Agent and other key members of the typical consultant team used by RPs, and how the project manager can lead them effectively in order to get the best performance from them. It follows on from the Understanding the Development Process course and (ideally, but not necessarily) the Intermediate Development courses.

Project Fundamentals Qualification

The APM Project Fundamentals Qualification introduces the main project management terminology tools & techniques and is for those wishing to gain a broad understanding of the principles of the profession in order to deliver schemes more effectively.

Project Management for Affordable Housing Development: Theory & Practice

The course runs for 9 days over a 6-week period, and offers the opportunity to acquire a professional project management qualification from the Association for Project Management, the Chartered body for PM in the UK. The course is set within the world of affordable housing property development & regeneration.
