HATC brings wiki-power to Orbit projects.

Monday, January 10th, 2011

HATC are harnessing the power of wiki’s to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of project control at Orbit Homes. We have been commissioned by Orbit to deliver a wikipedia-style knowledge base, which can be shared across the Development Division and wider organisation. The online information and search tool will capture, organise and store everything from process maps, guidance notes & documentation to trouble-shooting guides and online help forums.

“Wiki procedures are an information revolution for any project-led organisation,” explained Andrew, Managing Director of HATC. “We’re working with Orbit to both simplify and streamline their internal processes, and provide a fast and easy to use online resource to share knowledge and best practice amongst their teams.”

HATC is currently translating Orbit’s heavily text based procedures into more user friendly flowchart driven formats, making them easier to follow and adhere to. The team is also introducing audio and video content to better communicate more complex procedures, and engage more closely with its users. The online format makes it easily accessible from any location, whether via office desktop or remote download on site.

Andrew added “Good procedures need to combine relevant content with an enticing format. Our wiki approach ensures that information is not just better presented, but also encourages staff to add content and comment to keep it live, relevant and bang up to date. The system is completely tailored to the organisation and owned by its users. We can even make it look like a Facebook page, or however staff prefer, to encourage them to use it”.

The new system will go live in November and Chris Jones, Orbit Homes’ Divisional Development Director is already singing its praises. “”Wiki has got everyone excited at Orbit” said Chris. “Our existing procedures are not in a form that helps our staff, and HATC’s wiki approach gives us just what we’re looking for; a simple and light look and feel, with depth for those who want it. The system will not only improve project control, but enhance decision-making and deliver better service for the Group. It’s a low cost set-up and we’re convinced it will save us even greater costs through better efficiency in the future. It’s a win-win opportunity”.
